MASSAGE

There are many benefits of massage, both physical and mental. Massage relaxes sore or tight muscles, which can both speed recovery and help prevent injury, although there is controversy about whether or not there is actual proof of this. Massage increases the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, while facilitating a gentle stretch to muscles and surrounding tissues. Massage is a reward for your hard work. I regularly had various types of massage during my career, as many serious athletes do. But these days, every level of runner takes advantage of massage. Much of what I had was very deep tissue work, which can be quite painful but yields good results. You may feel it too extreme or unnecessary in your case. While massage can be relaxing and pleasurable, you may experience some soreness or pain when a therapist works on tight muscles even if you don’t opt for the deep tissue variety. You should communicate with the therapist and explain your training and what you want from the massage. Most therapists will ask, but make sure you express if it is too painful, or conversely, if it is not deep enough. Look for a certified massage therapist who specializes in sports massage, specifically one who treats runners, if possible. To find a good massage therapist, ask friends, or check throughout the running community via a club or a running store. You should schedule your massage for one of your days off running if possible. Also, make sure you hydrate well after your massage.
